Hall of Fame

The Delaware ASA Hall of Fame inducted three outstanding men on April 2, 2006 at the VFW Hall in Wilmington, Delaware.  The inductees were Gerald DuPhily, John Loeb, and Carmen “Cobbles” Silicato.

Gerald “Jerry” is the founder and former publisher of the award winning “Softball News”, a bi-weekly softball exclusive newspaper that circulated throughout Delaware and Cecil County from 1983 to 2000.  The newspaper became the oldest independently-owned softball newspaper in the country.  It earned over 40 national journalism awards, including a dozen individual awards for DuPhily.  Jerry is currently the president of TSN Publishing, Inc., a company that produces a variety of specialty magazines and publications that reach more than 350,000 combined readers. 

John Loeb started umpired in the DSUA Organization in 1966 and is still going strong.  John has umpired over 15,000 games and was inducted into the National Indicator Fraternity of ASA in 1992.  Some of John’s accomplishments include umpiring in the Women’s Major National Fast Pitch National Tournament in Stratford, Connecticut in 1973.  He has also worked the Women’s Major FP circuit in 1975 and 1977.  John continues to umpire girl’s fastpitch high school games and ASA men’s and women’s slow pitch games.  

Carmen “Cobbles” Silicato recently passed away, but will certainly be remembered for his outstanding softball play.  He was a multi-sport athlete at Bayard High School in Wilmington, Delaware, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, track and soccer.  In the mid 40’s Cobbles turned to the game of fastpitch softball.  He played in several highly rated leagues in Delaware and around the Mid-Atlantic, such as the Delaware Major League, Atlantic Coast League, and the Eastern Seaboard League.  His claim to fame came when he played for Frankie’s, a team which won several Delaware State FP Championships in the early 50’s.  From there “Cobbles” played for St. Anthony’s where he player/managed two consecutive Delaware State FP championships.  “Cobbles” was a terrific person on and off the field; he inspired many people with his desire and determination to never give up.

Tom Mason, Jr. is a longtime established collegiate coach, youth umpire, softball umpire, and adult coach. From 1972-1988, Tom was involved in umpiring New Castle County Adult Softball games, including State, Regional, and National tournaments.  He coached his Franny Glynn’s Women's team to four National tournaments, his best a third place finish in 1987 in Richmond, Virginia. Tom won three State Championships and was twice “Softball News Team of the Year.” His best and foremost accomplishment was his ability to put Wilmington College’s Softball team on the national map. Tom went 246-64 in 11 years. His teams earned six National tournament appearances and he was named Northeast Coach of the Year seven times.  

Robert Bromwell was decorated by the New Castle County Government in 1996 for his distinguished career in volunteerism and athletics, and for his countless hours of service and dedication to the citizens of NCC. Robert served as President of DSUA for seven years and worked from 1964-1996 years as an umpire in both scholastic and recreational softball games. Through his experience, Robert worked in over 30 ASA Regional tournaments and an ASA Men’s Major Open Slow Pitch Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. Robert also volunteered for over 17 years at the Boy’s & Girl’s Club of Wilmington, and was cited several times for his outstanding efforts receiving the Governors’ Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1996, 1997, and in 2001 the Thomas Jefferson award for outstanding community service to the State of Delaware.

In Mike Grieco's 40 year service to softball, he was a player, manager, league official, administrator, uniform designer, and an umpire. His softball career started in 1961 when he became a manager and league president for the first organized slow-pitch league in Delaware. In 1973 he helped form the Independent League where his teams won three Delaware State Championships. Later he formed the “original” September league, which still exists until this day. In 1980, Mike was elected Vice President of the U.S. Slow Pitch League. His team Worthy Brothers had some of the best players in the country playing for him. From 1980 to 1986 Mike served as Chairman of the State of Delaware and Eastern Shore softball marathon. He helped raise $250,000 for Easter Seals and Epileptic Foundation.

Bill Streets pitched Men’s FP in the late 1960’s through 1997 and won over 15 Delaware State Championships, three Maryland State Championships, and won back-to-back Pennsylvania State Championships. In 1996 his team finished third in the National Tournament held in Sacramento, California. Bill transitioned from player to coach successfully winning three consecutive league and Delaware State Championships with his 10-under team. His 1990 team went on to play in the National Championships in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. To this day Bill continues to coach a 23-under team “Orange Crush” and serves as head skipper of Newark High School, in Newark, Delaware.

2002

Sam Casalvera, an umpire who began his career in 1974 has held numerous DSUA leadership positions including DSUA President, Vice President, and Co-Chairman for various tournaments. His umpire accomplishments include, Eight DSSAA State Championship Finals, Three DSSAA Blue-Gold All-Star Games, Three ASA National Championships, including two Women Major SP championships, the other in Albany, Georgia for the Men’s Major Industrial SP championships. He also umpired the 1992 Men’s Super Qualifier in York, PA. He earned his National Indicator award in 1992. Sam was the DASA State Umpire in Chief for nine years and a state umpire school instructor for 11 years. Sam also coached his 35-over Master’s team to 12 state championships, (seven consecutive).

2001

Ron Amadio has umpired fast and slow pitch softball for 37 years. He has umpired 3 NAIA District Tournaments, one NCAA Northern Atlantic Championship and 3 State High School Championship games. Ron was inducted into the ASA National Indicator Fraternity in 1992.

W. Gordon Clark managed fast-pitch teams to 4 straight Delaware Softball Titles, compiling a record of 133-39. His teams won the Dover YMCA League and playoffs three times and the County Major League and Playoffs twice.

Jack Hudson, a 36 year veteran umpire, worked 7 Regional, 2 MAC, 2 Eastern States Industrial, 2 Inter Service and one ASA National tournaments. Jack was inducted into the ASA National Indicator Fraternity in 1992.

Dave Saxton umpired 27 Regional and 7 National Tournaments. His Nationals included the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Men’s Major Modified in Columbia, Md., Women’s Major in Pekin,Il., and the 1991 Pan-Am Trials in Colorado Springs. Dave was inducted into the ASA National Indicator Fraternity in 1992.

2000

Premier fast pitch pitcher Robert “Clyde” Farmer, who, during 1946-52, pitched 86 no-hitters. Farmer averaged 12 no-hitters per season and 16 strike-outs per game during that 7 year period. He struck out 20 of 21 batters in a game 3 times.

Norman Hanna, one of four umpires inducted, was the Delaware State Umpire-in-Chief for ten years. His umpiring career include the 1972 Inter-Service Tournament, an ASA Slow-Pitch National Championship and four Air National Guard national Championships.

Dionna Harris was a 2 time All-American outfielder and Atlantic 10 Conference MVP. She was the leading hitter on thee USA gold-winning Olympic Team in 1996 with a .406 BA.

John “Cookie” Lucas was the home run hitting king off fast-pitch softball in the Mid-Atlantic Region. He was named the MVP of the Eastern Fastball League.

Charles “Gene” Schaen, who along with Farmer and Lucas, was considered one of the top three softball players to ever play in Delaware. Schaen, a playing manager, played all four infield positions. Among his many honors, he played in 6 ASA Senior World Series Championships, placing first 3 times. He played in 4 International World Championships...............winning all 4. He was elected to the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame.

Ray Tomasetti, Sr. managed ASA Fast Pitch Softball for 37 years. His teams won 5 Delaware State Men’s Major Championships an was runner-up 11 times. His teams played in 7 Regional Tournaments and placed in the top four in 7 Invitational Championships.
